Chapter 12 – Frenzy

They burst into the path, twisted and shrieking humanoids altered and claimed by the energies of the Demonwood. They might have once been human, but their change had taken their humanity and left them as these repulsive and broken reflections of what they’d once been.

I felt my newfound awakening release energy within my gut, and it flowed through my being, as though flowing through my veins, into my arms, filling me with a primal strength. Blood pounded in my ears, almost deafening, and my vision turned red with rage.

“Come on,” I said, “Show me what you’ve got.”

I had no weapon, but I hardly cared. I had my fists. Hell, I had my teeth.

There were more than before, twice as many. One hesitated, as though sensing something different about me, but not the others. The first pounced, but I was already moving forward, and caught the creature by the throat.

The thing was surprisingly light, perhaps from starvation, just flesh and sinew over bone. The others came at me, and I swung the creature like a rag doll, smashing it into the others and then released the body into its comrades, its neck broken.

Even as I knocked three of them back with their dying ally, another pounced upon my back, digging dirty nails into my neck and its foul mouth attempting to bite off my ear. Even as its claws dug deep trenches into my flesh, I barely felt it; the pain was a distant experience as though happening to somebody else. I grabbed the thing by its thin wrist and whipped it in front of me. It attempted to go from my throat with its one free hand, and I caught it easily. The creature glared at me with such hatred. This thing had descended into a state of mind where it knew only survival, and long ago had accepted that every encounter would end either with it or its prey dead.

I spread my arms and flexed my chest with an explosion of strength I’d never possessed before, and in a fountain of blood I tore both arms from the thing’s torso. It fell to the earth at my feet, thrashing like a grounded trout gasping for air as its lifeblood pumped from the gaping wounds at its shoulders.

I hurled an arm away, as more of the despicable creatures pounced. The single remaining arm in my possession became a club, and I struck one across the face with such force the thing spun and fell away. I slammed my fist into the face of the next, shattering its jaw and breaking the rest of the few teeth that it possessed. The thing dropped to its knees before me, and I didn’t slow, bludgeoning the creature to a bloody mess with the dismembered arm.

As the creature fell, its head caved in, I vaguely became aware of another sinking a tooth into my side.

A protrusion of bone poked out of the end of the arm in my grip. I slammed it into the thing’s feral eye.
